9 years old case: high school student died after lintel falls on his head

Mangaluru: Puttur Civil Court (senior division) has passed an order to seize the Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner’s vehicle and office assets in the backdrop of failing to pay compensation of Rs 5 lakh as per the Court’s judgment to the parents of a high school student who died after the lintel of the Akshara Dasoha building fell on him. The student identified as Shahruk Khan was a 9th std student of Kabaka Vidyapura government school in Puttur taluk.

The incident

On March 4th 2010, the lintel of the Akshara Dasoha building, which was under construction at the Vidyapura government school fell on the student Shahruk Khan injuring him grievously which resulted in his untimely death.

The case

In this backdrop, the parents of the deceased child, Abdul Khader and Tahira filed a case against the school and the contractor demanding compensation. After conducting investigation, Puttur Civil Court passed the order that the government should provide a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the parents of the deceased child. The government in turn, filed an appeal questioning the judgment, but was rejected by the Court.

Mangaluru Ibrahim K S and Puttur’s Arun B K argued in favour of the applicants. ‘Udayavani’ attempted to contact the DC Sasikanth Senthil in this connection, but he was unavailable.
