Mangaluru: With the city police planning to implement Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) more stringently, soon shops located near schools and colleges will be compelled to stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products. Even a complaint over WhatsApp will result in strict action against such shops.
Responding to a complaint by a caller regarding the sale of tobacco products in the vicinity of schools and colleges, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Hanumantharaya said that people could click photos of such shops on their smart phones and send it to the police. The DCP was responding to queries during the weekly phone-in programme on Friday June 7th.
There were also many complaints from the public regarding auto rickshaw drivers demanding excess fare from passengers in violation to the actual meter reading. The DCP asked their drivers to desist from demanding excess fare from their passengers and also asked them to display the list of fares at all auto rickshaw points in the city.
