Mangaluru: In the backdrop of the continuous efforts by the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and others in convincing Mangalore University to introduce Tulu as an optional language, the University has finally given its approval to give Tulu as an optional language.

Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy president A C Bhandary said that the university had permitted study of Tulu as an optional language with emphasis on studying the language and its culture. The course would be run in association with the academy.

The heads of a few colleges have shown interest in introducing Tulu studies. Hence, in order to introduce the study of Tulu, the heads of colleges under the university which are located in Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu and Udupi districts have to take permission from the university. Students opting for Tulu as an optional language will study the language, its literature and culture in a formal, orderly manner, explained Mr Bhandadry and added that the initiative may prove to be a big boost for Tulu.

A syllabus committee headed by chairman of the board of studies, Department of Kannada, Shivaram Shetty, has already framed the syllabus for Tulu studies. Mr Bhandary is hopeful of supplying text books to students promptly and has urged everyone to opt for Tulu language and support it.

Speaking of the introduction of Tulu as an optional language, Registrar (administration) of the university, A M Khan, said that colleges offering Tulu as a subject have to mention the same when furnishing details for annual affiliation process. Already five colleges have indicated their intention to impart Tulu study from this academic year onward informed Mr Khan and added that the syllabus for the course has already been approved.
