Udupi: In the backdrop of absence of pre-monsoon showers and south west monsoon making its way towards Kerala almost 10 days behind schedule, the parched temple town Udupi resorted to myths and married two frogs to please the ‘Rain God’ on Saturday, June 8th.

According to Hindu mythology, Varuna is the god of oceans and there is a mythical belief that the union of wild frogs will bless the lands with rainfall and rid them of drought.

The marriage in question is conducted as per the traditional Hindu rituals. On this occasion, the bride Varsha from Kolalagiri and the groom Varuna from Kalsanka were married at Hotel Kediyoor at the auspicious muhurath of Simha Lagna.

Nityananda Olakadu, Udupi district citizen committee trust and Pancharathna seva trust arranged the ceremony.

Speaking of the marriage an organiser said, ”There is severe water problem in Udupi. People are struggling to do daily chores. This kind of a ceremony has taken place seven years ago as well. The myth which surrounds the frogs is that if there is croaking there will be rain. Human beings have destroyed this environment and continue to do so. We hope that this way Udupi will be blessed with rainfall soon.”
