631 mm of rain within 14 days in the land of coffee!

DC gives information regarding damage due to rain in Chikkamagaluru district

Chikkamagaluru: This time, many districts in the state have been shaken by the torrential rains and Chikkamagaluru is one among them. Along with floods, strong winds and landslides, the district also faces huge losses in crops and loss of life at various locations. The Deputy Commissioner of the district Dr Gautham Bagadi has given information regarding the damage incurred due to the torrential rains in the district.

Normally, 199 mm of rain occurs for the month of August in Chikkamagaluru district, but in the last 14 days, 631 mm of rain has experienced. This is more than three times the usual amount of rain! Due to this intense downpour, altogether 9 lives have been lost in the malnad region, among whom, the corpse of one person is yet to be found. Altogether 26 relief centers have been set up in the district and close to Rs 5 lakh has been provided to seven persons respectively as compensation.

More than 1,631 people have been rendered homeless by this times floods. 319 houses have been completely destroyed while 820 houses have suffered partial damage. As many as 917 houses in Mudigere taluk alone have been damaged.

Around 950 km of road throughout Chikkamagaluru district has been damaged, 2065 electricity poles have fallen down because of which 45 villages are without electricity.

Approximately 159 bridges and 34 lakes have been damaged by this times rain. Chikkamagaluru district has incurred a total loss of Rs 240 crore of which, Mudigere alone has suffered damages worth Rs 140 crore, informed the DC.
