Mangaluru: Chaos prevailed at the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat general body meeting on Monday during passage of resolution to supersede Haleyangady Gram Panchayat.

The opposition Congress raised slogans against the BJP in the well of the House with the ruling BJP members too raising slogans of Bharat Mata ki Jai.

Justifying their decision to dissolve the Haleyangady Gram Panchayat, BJP member Vinod Kumar Bolluru said that the Panchayat was not conducting the mandated gram sabhas and general meetings. It was pointed out that the villagers had even filed a complaint against the Gram Panchayat to Lokayukta.

Member Mamatha Gatti while expressing her opposition urged the president Meenakshi Shantigodu to give another chance to the Gram Panchayat and appoint an administrative officer.

Notably this is the second time that Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat passed a resolution to supersede the Gram Panchayat, the first such occurrence being in Sullia. In that instance, however, the Sullia Gram Panchayat had approached the court and stalled the Zilla Panchayat’s decision to supersede it.

Chief Executive Officer Dr R Selvamani was also present at the meeting.
