Price rise during Navaratri celebration: Vegetables, flowers turn costly

Udupi: Navaratri celebrations have started throughout the coast. Meanwhile, the prices of vegetables and flowers which are essential for the festival have soared.

Presently, a kg of tomato costs Rs 35, beans is at Rs 40, cucumber Rs 55, carrot Rs 25, onion Rs 50, brinjal Rs 35, cauliflower Rs 35, capsicum Rs 40, ladyfinger Rs 40, yam Rs 40, ginger Rs 50 and cabbage costs Rs 35. In other words, vegetable prices have soared by Rs 5 to Rs 10 in a single day.

Fruits-flowers turn costly

An atti of Shankarapura jasmine cost Rs 1,200, one Maru chrysanthemum costs Rs 80, zinnia Rs 40, marigold Rs 100, white chrysanthemum Rs 80 and rose costs Rs 100. A kg of sweet lemon costs Rs 80, orange Rs 160, sapota Rs70, pomegranate Rs120, papaya Rs 45, pineapple Rs 60, mango Rs 100, grapes Rs 100,  watermelon Rs 40 and pear Rs 100.

Good business!

Navaratri business is occurring with full force. All flowers were sold out within a day. But there is a lack in supply of good flowers. Few flowers wilt within a day and this causes loss – Ravi, Flower Merchant, Udupi

Vegetable prices have soared suddenly, yet people are still buying. Presently, the business is better than during Krishnashtami and Ganeshotsav – Aboobakkar, Vegetable Merchant, Udupi
