Mangaluru: Premananda Shetty, corporator of Mangladevi ( ward no 56) is being projected as a potential candidate to the post of city Mayor. Notification for the election to the posts of mayor and deputy mayor is yet to be issued by Mysuru regional commissioner.

The five-time corporator’s candidature is reportedly being endorsed by Mangaluru South MLA, D Vedavyasa Kamath. However, BJP will have to make amends in the current reservation criteria so that Premananda can be elected to Mayor’s post.

If it chooses to abide by the reservation criteria fixed by the then Congress-JD(S) coalition, the post of mayor will be earmarked for a candidate from backward A category and chances of seniormost BJP corporator Dinesh of becoming Mayor will be high.

Out of the 60 wards in the city, BJP had bagged 44 seats while Congress and SDPI bagged 14 and two seats respectively.
