Bantwal: An incident where an elderly woman falsely alleged snatching of her gold chain by bike-borne robbers has been reported from here.
Shantha Nayak, a resident of Jakribettu within Bantwal municipal council limits, claimed to be have come to town market on January 8 and reported that two chain snatchers on a bike pulled over and snatched her gold chain while she was returning home. The incident also resulting in a scratch on her back.
Shantha informed this to her daughter, who promptly registered a complaint at the local police station in Bantwal.
Considering the incident to be serious, Circle Inspector TD Nagaraj formed a team led by Sub Inspector Avinash and Sub Inspector Kalaimar of crime branch, who immediately started probing the case.
The police officials, however, on reviewing CCTV footages of the area where Nayak claimed the chain snatching occurred, detected no such incident.
Following which Nayak confessed to fabricating the chain snatching story.
Apparently, Nayak had lent her gold chain to a relative but feared that her daughter would be angry about it so she fabricated the dramatic incident and to back it up also scratched her back herself.
After settling the case, SI Avinash-led team has filed a case against Shantha Nayak.
