Bagalkot: Police-constable shoots self with service rifle, dies

Vijaypura: A 28-year-old police constable posted on guard duty at the residence of Superintendent of Police Bagalkot allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle early on Saturday morning.

The deceased, Manjunath Harijan, a Koppal resident was attached to the Karnataka Armed Reserve Police. 

Reportedly, Harijan had been transferred to Bagalkot around a year ago where he was posted as the security guard at the SP’s residence. He had reported to duty in the night-shift (i.e from 2am-6am) on Saturday. Shortly after finishing his shift, Harijan is said to have shot himself with his official 303-rifle at the SP’s residence itself.

As per the police, it is not yet known why he resorted to the extreme step. His body has been sent for autopsy and an investigation is ongoing.
