DK Zilla Panchayat, Udayavani hold workshop on rainwater harvesting

Mangaluru: A workshop on rainwater harvesting, organized by Udayavani in collaboration with the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat was held on Wednesday at the Nethravathi Auditorium in the Zilla Panchayat building.

Dakshina Kannada District In-charge Minister and State Minister for Urban Development and Housing U T Khader inaugurated the workshop.

Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the workshop Khader said, “The government is planning to implement the Green Building Incentive policy in order to promote rainwater harvesting in houses and private buildings.”

Eminent rainwater harvesting exponent Shree Padre, who was the resources person of the program requested the gathering to be very serious about rainwater and its conservation.

“It is shameful that though our district has been receiving around 3500 mm rainfall annually, we are forced to depend on tankers for drinking water.”

” If every family is ready to install rainwater harvesting system in their houses, the district will never have drinking water problems”, he said.

He further added, “Rainwater harvesting will be made mandatory for those houses built on 30 X 40 sq ft land and those who install rainwater harvesting system in their buildings will be provided concession in tax.

Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, Deputy commissioner Shashikath Senthil, DK Zilla Panchayath CEO Dr. Selvamani were also present at the gathering.
