Mangaluru: Everyone knows the method of working for a whole month and receiving their salary at the end on the month. But this is not applicable to some Gram panchayat staffs. Even though they carry out their duties diligently throughout the month, their salaries are being paid only once in three months!

Of the more than 40,144 GP staffs in the state, most have not received their salaries since March. This is so because the amount has not been released from the government’s treasury. Consequently, the staffs appointed for data entry, operator, clerk, bill collector, pump operator and attender at many panchayats are now facing problem.

Only option, borrow money

With no salary since three months, GP staffs are finding it hard to manage their families. This period of the year is when activities related to education take place, and on such an occasion, the lack of money is forcing the staffs to borrow money for the admission of their children into schools.

Earlier, the particular GP’s used to themselves pay the salaries of their staffs. But later, the salaries were given by the government directly through ZP. But since a few days , the system has failed.

The helplessness of the Gram Panchayats

GP’s with good income have opted to pay the salaries of their staffs from their own treasury and later fill the deficit when the government eventually releases the salary amount. But most of the GP’s do not have good income and in this backdrop remain helpless.

Amidst this, the government had earlier notified to make entry in the software, the salaries being paid to the GP staffs from its treasury. But thousands staffs remain pending due to a technical problem regarding approval through EFMS. They are facing another problem due to not getting their salaries. Therefore now it is the government’s responsibility to make sure that the names of the GP staffs is not lost.

Will be released soon

“The money had not been released from the government till now. Because of this a few GP staffs are facing salary problem. The higher officials have informed us that the money will be released by the government in a few days,” informs Dr R Selvamani, CEO, ZP

Let the salary be given monthly

“GP staffs are facing problem since they haven’t received their salaries since 3 months. The government has been urged to stop the process of releasing the money once in 3 months from its treasury and instead start giving the salaries monthly,” said Deviprasad Bolma, State President, GP Employees Development Association
