Hunsur: Mass death of pigs at farm raises alarm

Hunsur: The death of about 250 pigs in a span of 10 days at a farm here has alarmed the public.

The deaths reportedly occurred at the farm, run by a farmer named Suresh Bannikuppe, situated at Uddur village in Kasaba Hobli of Hunsur taluk.

The farmer claimed that he had hired the services of a veterinary doctor after pigs started symptoms of a mysterious disease. The veterinarian had recommended medication, but the hogs did not respond to treatment and continued to die mysteriously.

The mass death of pigs in a short span has villagers worried.

Meanwhile, the authorities have launched an investigation into the deaths. On Tuesday, a team comprising of Tehsildar and officials of the animal husbandry department visited the farm and have begun an investigation.

Dr. Chennabasappa, assistant sirector of the animal husbandry department, told Udayavani that the samples of the pigs have been sent to a laboratory for investigations and the exact cause of the deaths will be known once the report is received.

The pigs belonged to Suresh of Uddur village in Kasaba Hobli of Hunsur taluk, who was rearing more than 250 pigs. The pigs have been dying for the past ten days.

Untreatable disease: Dr. Nagarjuna, owner of Malika Suresh Bannikuppe Veterinary Hospital visited the place on information and gave vaccination against fever. However, pigs continue to die without benefit.

The owner’s action is suspicious: the dead pigs did not know what the owner Suresh had done. Information was given that everything was buried, this also raised suspicion.

MLA HP Manjunath informed about this matter to Tehsildar Dr. Ashok and Veterinary Department, Tehsildar and Assistant Director of Veterinary Department Dr. Channabasappa, Dr. Nagarjun, Veterinary Department of Bannikuppe visited the village on Tuesday and conducted an inspection. After post-mortem examination of the dead pigs, a deep pit was dug by JCB and buried en masse.

People are worried about the mass death of pigs and the public has demanded to know the exact reason and take necessary action.

The examination period is yet to come:
As per the advice of the senior veterinary doctor, the post-mortem examination has been conducted to find out the reason for the mass death of the pigs and the organs have been sent to the laboratory. Channabasappa told Udayavani.
