Drug abuse and illicit trafficking remain significant global challenges, posing threats to individuals, families, and communities worldwide. The detrimental consequences of drug abuse include deteriorating health, broken relationships, and a loss of productivity. Recognizing the urgency to address these issues, June 26 is annually observed as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, also known as World Drug Day.
Theme: “People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention”
This year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking revolves around the theme of “People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention.” The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) aims to raise awareness about the importance of respecting and empathizing with individuals who use drugs. It emphasizes the provision of evidence-based, voluntary services to all, offering alternatives to punishment, prioritizing prevention, and adopting a compassionate approach. The UNODC’s campaign for this year emphasizes combating stigma and discrimination against people who use drugs by promoting respectful and non-judgmental language and attitudes.
The UNODC’s Focus: Combating HIV and Hepatitis Epidemics
This year’s Drug Day campaign by the UNODC seeks to raise awareness about the AIDS and hepatitis epidemics among individuals who use drugs. The focus is on expanding and strengthening HIV and hepatitis prevention programs. By prioritizing prevention and increasing access to preventive measures, the aim is to mitigate the impact of these diseases and improve the well-being of affected individuals.
Historical Significance
The United Nations General Assembly designated June 26 as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on December 7, 1987. This decision was made to support global efforts towards creating drug-free societies. Since then, the day has been observed annually to raise awareness, foster international cooperation, and promote initiatives to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
