Mangaluru: Police arrested a man from Mumbai for allegedly raping a differently-abled minor girl in a hospital and a woman accomplice for aiding him.

The accused have been identified as Abdul Haleem, a native of Bihar who resides in Mumbai, and Shamina Banu (22), a resident of Kulshekara, police said.

They were arrested based on the complaint by the victim’s mother.

According to the complaint, Abdul Haleem and a relative of the complainant had been injured in an accident and were receiving treatment at a private hospital.

It is alleged that Shamina Banu, who is the sister-in-law of the complainant, and Haleem were engaged in an intimate act when the victim entered the hospital room. Noticing the woman, it is alleged, Banu coaxed the girl to lie down on the bed. Haleem later sexually assaulted the girl, the complaint said.

Based on the complaint, police have registered a case under the provisions of the POCSO Act.

Personnel of the Women’s Police Station arrested Shamina Banu on August 16 and was produced before the court. She has been remanded to judicial custody for 15 days.

Haleem was arrested in Madgaon by the Goa police on August 16 based on a request by the Mangaluru police while he was fleeing by a train. On Thursday, he was produced before the court, which remanded him to 15-day judicial custody.
