Mangaluru: A huge well that is suspected to be almost a century old has been discovered in Kodialbail during the demolition of Navbharath Circle(Rashtrakavi Govind Pai Circle) on Saturday.
The circle was being demolished as it was unscientifically built and causing inconvenience in the smooth flow of traffic.
Road excavation work under the Smart City project has been going on for some days here. Now, the workers found a huge well in the area.
Mayor Premananda Shetty along with MCC officials visited the spot and conducted an inspection.
Earlier, a 120-year-old well was discovered near the autorickshaw stand next to the Taj Mahal restaurant during the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) road construction work near the Hampankatta Circle.
According to locals, there is a story that a century ago Appanna, a native of Hampanakatte, would sit on a wooden pallet and provide water to thirsty travellers coming to Mangaluru. He is said to have brought the water for the travellers from the well. Hence the area got the name ‘Appanna katte’ (Appanna’s circle) which later became ‘Hampanakatte.’
