Mangaluru: The city is currently facing severe water shortage and the Pre University Board has not taken any decision on the request from the PU colleges in the district to postpone reopening of the classes this year due to water scarcity. Hence many private PU colleges have postponed reopening of PU classes, which were to scheduled to reopen on May 20.

The managements of St Aloysius, Sharada Vidyalaya and some other colleges have temporarily put off the classes because of inadequate arrangements to meet water needs of students. Earlier, a petition had been sent by the district PU College Principals Association to the PU Board requesting postponement of reopening date by a few days due to lack of water.

St Aloysius management has decided to reopen the classes after June 1st while Sharada Vidyalaya has postponed the reopening date for PUC by a week. Principal of St Aloysius PU College said that the severe water shortage and extremely hot weather while make it difficult for the students to sit inside the classrooms for several hours every day.

Meanwhile, Sharada Vidyalaya teachers said that the date of reopening would be announced after the district starts getting rains and that the students have already been informed of the change.

Canara PU College principal said that Canara PU College would be functional from May 20 onward as the PU Board has not issued any instructions so far, and added that there is a need to postpone reopening of the college.

Speaking on the issue, Dakshina Kannada district additional deputy commissioner R Venkatachalapathy informed that the district administration has not received any order regarding the postponing of PU classes, neither form the government nor the PU Board.
