Uppinangady: A woman and child came under the wheels of a jeep in an accident wherein a hotel worker drove a jeep which was parked. However, the woman and child only suffered minor injuries and miraculously escaped from the clutches of death.

The injured woman is identified as Chandralata from Uruval village who has sustained head injury and was treated at a private hospital in Puttur as an outpatient. Her two-and-a-half-year old son Ritej has suffered bruises.

Incident synopsis

Jagadish from Hirebandadi had brought firewood for Tiffin Hall hotel in his jeep. In order to empty the goods, he parked the vehicle near the kitchen and then proceeded to have a cup of tea. He left the vehicle keys back in the vehicle itself.

After clearing the goods, the hotel worker identified as Shankar started the jeep. The vehicle caught speed suddenly and crashed into the bikes parked in front of the hotel. Then it went and hit Chandralata who was standing with her son in her arms in front of a medical shop in the vicinity. The fore of impact was such that the toddler was thrown off, the woman came under the wheels of the charging vehicle which then went and crashed into a parked scooty. The jeep then went dragging the scooty, crashed into the pillar of a gate and finally came to a standstill with its rear wheel lodged on the pavement in front of the stores. The scooty and a bike were completely destroyed and pillar too suffered structural damage.

The entire incident occurred in mere seconds. Since it was a Sunday, the people density was relatively less and hence a major tragedy was averted.

The jeep had hit on Saturday as well!

On Saturday, the same jeep which had brought goods to the same hotel was rammed into the roadside by a worker of the very hotel and damaged the bumper of the vehicle. Even after the incident, the driver did not take precaution and left the key back in the vehicle. The locals have expressed much anger towards this careless behaviour of the driver.
