People trapped as Landfill collapses in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad: A garbage dump was caved in at the Ghazipur landfill where four vehicles have fallen into a canal.

One person is reportedly dead, while a few others are said to be trapped.  

One body has been recovered from the canal, where the cars fell.

The incident reportedly happened around 2:30 pm when the garbage heap collapsed in Ghazipur.  It is also reported that a few locals might be trapped inside as well. 

Ambulances and fire tenders have reached the spot to help with the rescue operations. The Delhi police have confirmed that it has recovered one body from the spot.

The Ghazipur landfill site that came up in 1984, is the oldest of the three landfills and it caters to the waste generated in East and North East Delhi, Old Delhi, Paharganj zone and the entire New Delhi areas.
