Mangaluru: Parts of the coastal region received rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms on Saturday. On Saturday evening, a laborer lost his life to a lightning strike while seeking shelter from the rain in Ichlampadi of Kadaba taluk.

The Dakshina Kannada district witnessed heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning, leading to disruptions in various parts of Sullia and Kadaba taluk. Falling trees blocked roads, causing traffic disturbances, and in some instances, trees toppled onto electric wires, resulting in power outages.

In Sullia, a fallen tree obstructed the Kadaba-Panja road at Pulikukku, temporarily halting traffic until authorities cleared the passage.

Additionally, severe weather conditions caused damage to properties, with more than 200 arecanut and coconut trees uprooted in a plantation in Edamangala, Kadaba taluk. Structures were also affected, with reports of a building sheet being damaged in the area.

The adverse weather extended to other parts of the district, with moderate rainfall reported in Puttur taluk.

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an “Yellow Alert,” forecasting further rain with thunder and lightning on May 12.

In Kadaba’s Noojibalthila Village, a laborer lost his life, and two others sustained injuries after being struck by lightning while taking refuge in a shed. The deceased has been identified as Srikishan (56) a native of Uttar Pradesh.  Mahadev (30) and Gauri Chaudhry (45) from Bihar were injured.

Rise in daily minimum temperature

The rise in minimum temperatures has exacerbated the situation, with Mangaluru experiencing temperatures above normal levels. On May 11, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 34.8°C and a minimum temperature of 27.5°C.

The adverse weather conditions also affected the neighbouring Udupi district, where moderate rainfall was reported in several areas.
