Recognizing suicide warning signs: What to do if someone seems suicidal?

Suicide is a tragic reaction to stressful life situations. It is not a mental illness in itself, but a serious potential consequence of treatable mental disorders that include depression.

Whether you’re considering suicide or know someone who feels suicidal,

Here are a few warning signs to be aware of

1.Changes in sleep pattern is a sign of depression but also suicidal behaviors. Someone who is feeling suicidal may sleep more than normal, struggling to get out of bed at all.

2.Long-lasting sadness, mood swings, and unexpected rage. Acting indifferent in the face of emotional situations are also connected with suicidal behavior

3.All of a sudden becoming calm after a period of depression or any kind of tantrums can be a sign that the person has made a decision to end his or her life

4.Loss of interest or pleasure in activities the person previously enjoyed and choosing to be alone.

5.It is said that around 50% to 75% of those considering suicide will talk about death or self harm with a friend or relative

How to talk to someone who seems suicidal

1.Remember to stay calm and speak in a reassuring tone

2.Do not get irritated or yell at them

3.Make sure you acknowledge that their feelings are legitimate

4.Always offer support and encouragement

5.If they open up do not judge them and provide them with a solution

6.Make sure you tell them that help is available and try calling AASRA at 91-9820466726 or 022 2754 6669, they have trained counsellors available 24/7
