Mangaluru: A gang of robbers broke into a house in Kalpane near here and looted gold worth 8 lakhs and cash worth 30,000 on Tuesday evening.

The incident reportedly took place in the absence of family members on December 26.

The burgled house belongs to Philomena D’Silva when she was away from home for a wedding. The theft came to light when she returned back at 12 midnight. The thieves had entered the house by breaking open the front doors and had escaped with the booty from the almirah.

The thieves also broke into the locked houses of Joy Pereira and G M Fernandes in the neighbourhood but did not find any valuables there. The theft attempts came to light when Lucy Lobo and S Noronha who look after the two houses respectively arrived on Wednesday morning.

Kankanady Police are investigating the case.
