Tumakuru: In a shocking incident, an Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police (ASI) in the district has been accused of raping a mentally challenged woman in a moving vehicle on Saturday night.

ASI Umesh was arrested on Sunday following a complaint by the victim’s mother. He was questioned and later suspended.

It is said that when Umesh was on rounds on Saturday night, he noticed a woman near a bridge at Antharasanahalli bypass. After telling her that he would drop her home and she got into the jeep, he allegedly attempted to rape her. When she resisted, he gagged her and raped her twice, the victim’s brother told the media on Sunday. It is said that the ASI then asked the victim her brother’s number and asked him to pick her up, saying that she was ‘found wandering.’

But the brother said that he was unwell and so the ASI offered to drop her home. Her mother received her and on asking her the reason for abusing the officer, the victim narrated the incident.

A complaint was filed the next day and after a case was registered the victim was sent for a medical examination.

The victim’s brother said that his sister used to go out regularly and used to return home by herself.

Meanwhile, though it is said that the incident took place in a police jeep, sources in the police department say that the incident took place in a private vehicle, but refused to tell the media who was driving it. However, they have said that a probe would be conducted to reveal the truth.
