Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr K Vidyakumari paid a visit to the idol manufacturing facility at Kadiyali in the city on Friday evening and inspected the process of Ganesha idol production.
The DC made inquiries about the process and materials used for making idols.
Vidyakumari also raised awareness about the harms of using plaster of Paris and chemical colours on idols which pollute the waterbodies by leaching hazardous chemicals like lead and chromium. She also emphasized the popularisation of idols made of natural materials without the use of colour.
She also instructed the environmental pollution authorities to take immediate legal action if anyone is found to be using chemicals hazardous to humans, animals as well as environment.
The DC emphasized the celebration of Ganesha Chaturti festivities in an environment-friendly way. She instructed officials to make suitable arrangements for the immersion of Ganesha idols.
He said that arrangements should be made to discharge only clay and unpainted idols near water bodies and solid waste should not be allowed to be discharged along with the idol.
Urban local bodies and village panchayats should make separate arrangements for the dissolution of Ganesha idols.
Public should celebrate Ganesha Chaturthi in peace and harmony and eco-friendly.
On this occasion Regional Environment Officer K.M. Raju, District Correspondent Manjunath B. and others were present
