Kaiga n-plant sets new record

Karwar: India’s nuclear power plant operator Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) on Monday said its initial 220 MW unit at Kaiga in Karnataka has set another record of working for 766 days consistently. 

In an announcement, NPCIL said the Unit 1 of Kaiga Generating Station (KGS) outperformed the prior record of 765 days set by Unit 5 of Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS) in 2014. 

“With this accomplishment, KGS-1 currently stands second in the world among Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) and fourth among all atomic power reactors,” it said. 

The indigenously-planned reactor has been operating ceaselessly since May 13, 2016, controlled by domestic fuel. The unit began business activity on November 16, 2000. 

As indicated by NPCIL, alongside KGS-1, four more reactors RAPS-3 (659 days), KGS-2 (467 days) and MAPS-2 (357 days) are working for long periods. 

The NPCIL as of now has 22 reactors with an aggregate limit of 6,780 MW in task and eight reactors with limit of 6,200 MW under development. 

Work has additionally been started on twelve more reactors (9,000 MW). They have been concurred authoritative endorsement and financial sanction by the government.
