Bengaluru: After a heavy downpour in the city, a three-storey building in the Pornachandra Layout in the Nagarbhavi area developed cracks and tilted on October 5.
Reports said that BBMP officials were immediately dispatched to the spot and evacuated the buildings’ residents.
The building was reportedly built only six years ago.
“At the outset, we can see that the building has been constructed on a stormwater drain (SWD). No engineer will approve a plan for construction on the SWD. It is quite obvious that the building doesn’t have any permissions,” BBMP Zonal Commissioner of RR Nagar B Reddy Shankar Babu was quoted as saying to Deccan Herald.
BBMP will order a structural audit of the building and a notice will be issued to the owners, sources said. In the meantime, the city officials have cordoned off the building and residents will have to make alternate arrangements.
Recently, several buildings in the city had collapsed. On September 28, a dilapidated three-storey staff quarter of Bangalore Milk Union Limited crumbled near Dairy Circle. A day prior to this, another building collapsed in the Lakksandra area. Fortunately, none were hurt in both incidents.
