M’luru: Bank forced to refund money to woman after ATM cash transfer fails

A failed money transfer while executing a cash deposit through an ATM was immediately refunded to a woman after she staged a protest against the bank staff for their indifferent attitude.

The woman had visited the Surathkal branch of a nationalised bank to deposit money to the account of an acquaintance for emergency hospitalisation expenses. However, the bank staff directed her to execute the transaction through the ATM.

The woman did as asked but upon depositing the money she got a message that the transaction is under process due to technical issues. As per the normal banking practises any such transactions are reversed by the bank in 3-4 working days after verifying the transaction.

In this case, as the money was required for an emergency treatment, the woman again approached the bank staff and sought their help to effect the fund transfer immediately. The staff however remained indifferent and told her to visit the head office to register her complaint.

Irked by this, the woman pointed out that the situation would not have arisen if they had done the money transfer at the bank itself instead of asking her to use the ATM. She even gathered a few passers-by and voiced that the staff was not addressing the customers’ grievances.

The matter was finally resolved with police intervention. The bank verified the transaction and after confirming that the money had been deposited in the ATM they refunded her the cash with a signed undertaking that if the recipient’s account is credited with the deposited money the same will be reversed later.
