Udupi: A woman, along with her newborn child, was provided shelter at the Sakhi Kendra after the family of her deceased husband refused to accept them.

Social worker Vishu Shetty Ambalapadi, who rescued the woman and child, said the woman’s husband Ayyappa (28) of Badami suddenly died of a heart attack recently. Ayyappa and the woman, from Gangavathi, had married each other two years ago against the wishes of their family.

Ayyappa, a mechanic by profession, complained of chest pains and was rushed to the district hospital on Thursday morning. However, he died without responding to treatment. When Ayyappa’s family was informed of his death they agreed to receive his mortal remains but refused to accept his wife and 20-day-old child.

For now, the destitute woman and her newborn are being given temporary shelter at the Sakhi Kendra in Nittoor.

Vishu Shetty Ambalapadi has urged the district administration, women and child welfare department to intervene in the matter and take appropriate steps to reunite the families so that the woman and child do not end up on the streets.
