Bengaluru: A 74-year-old was arrested for raping his 13-year-old granddaughter from the past three years at his residence in the city.
The shocking matter came to light when authorities at the victim’s school questioned her after noticing some behavioral changes.
The girl broke into tears and told the teachers what her grandfather used to do. She stated that he had threatened to file a theft case against her if she revealed the matter to anyone.
The teachers then alerted the victim’s mother. The mother, a local resident, had got married to the accused’s son who was employed in an IT firm. The couple had three children, two boys and a girl and had been living separately since 2013. The girl lived with her father at his house.
As soon as the mother got to know of her daughter’s plight, she took her to a nearby hospital where doctors confirmed that she was raped. The mother and her sister then decided to confront the accused before informing the police. However, the accused only shouted and assaulted them.
The mother then informed her husband but he ignored her; when relatives were confronted, they wanted the case to be hushed up.
A case was finally filed at Pulakeshinagar and the accused was charged under sections 12, 4, 7, 8 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act.
The police have said that the accused kept denying the charges, but they had ample evidence against him.
