Woman loses 16 lakh rupees on Facebook

Mangaluru: A woman in city lost 16 lakh rupees after a brief online friendship with an unidentified man. The victim has been identified as Reshma from Attavar. Cyber police station has registered a case in this regard.

According to sources, Reshma received a Facebook friend request from a man named Jack Coleman. She accepted his friend request even she did not know him and began chatting with him which later on grew into a regular chat.

In May, Coleman told Reshma that he wished to make a gift of £20,000 (over 18 lakh rupees) to her family. Though Reshma refused, Coleman insisted that she should accept it.

On May 9th, Reshma received a call from another man who introduced himself as a customs official from New Delhi and asked her to pay a fine on the consignment sent by Coleman. He informed her that if she failed to pay the fine, she would end up behind bars since the the package sent by Coleman had violated several rules.

As a result, Reshma transferred money amounting to 16,69,000 rupees in all through internet banking. Later, when she tried to contact Coleman and the customs official,l post transferring of the money, their numbers remained switched off.
