Several left homeless in Sullia

Sullia: In a massive landslide that took place at Jodupalanear Sampaje-Madikeri claimed a person’s life and trapped several others under the debris on August 17th.

The deceased has been identified as Basappa (51), an employee of Sullia government hospital. The bodies of his wife and two children are yet to be traced. Also two children of one Hameed have gone missing informed the police. On Friday the three houses collapsed and the area is covered with water blocking vehicular movement.

Following mudslides in Jodupala area, the residents were shifted to a nearby school on Thursday. Over 800 people have been shifted to safer areas and it is learnt that over 100 people are still stranded in Monnangeri area. Over 600 residents of Monnangeri and Jodupala area have been shifted to Sampaje, Chembu and Aranthodu schools.

Kodagu police along with rescue disaster teams from Mangaluru arrived to Jodupala and recovered the body of Basappa. Sullia circle inspector Sathish Kumar, sub-inspector Manjunath and staff have arrived to the spot.

The incessant rains have halted the rescue operation in several areas. Over 60 people who were stranded in a school were shifted to Kallugundi and Aranthodu schools.

Rainfall subsides

On Friday, the rainfall subsided in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Mangaluru, though the low lying areas are still remain inundated.

Over 50 houses in Ullal are submerged in water with the Nethravati River is still flowing above the danger mark. There is a slight receding in the water level of Kumaradhara and Payaswini River. Landslides in Bisile Ghat area have stranded commuters.

As per the w weather departments report, the rains are likely to continue for two more days in Dakshina Kannada.

Warning

The Dakshina Kannada district administration has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea on Saturday. For any help they can contact the department through toll free number 1077, said DC Sasikanth Senthil.
