Udupi: A part of Udupi city has received tap water after a gap of 8 days. Attempts are on to provide water supply to other waters phase by phase. The city has been facing a major lack of water resource.

As water in Baje dam across the Swarna had reached dead storage level, water is being pumped from the large holes on the riverbed to the dam, from where the water is being supplied through the pipeline network.

Since the regular flow of water has stopped, water is being pumped from Shiroor to Manei, from Manei to Bhandary Betta, from Bhandary Betta to Puttige and from Puttige to Baje dam. 9 pumps were used on Thursday.

On Thursday, water was provided to Nittur, Subrahmanya town, Gopalapura, Kakkunje, Doddana Gudde and other areas. Water will be provided to Manipal, Indrali, Doddana Gudde and few other areas on Friday, informed municipality officials.

6 divisions, 1 thousand liters

The city has been divided into 6 divisions and water will be provided to division one-by-one. A nodal staff has been appointed for every division. They shall be receiving the calls and making arrangements to supply water through tankers. Thousand liters of water will be supplied per household. The public must compulsorily fill in details and sign the trip sheet of the tanker which arrives to supply water, informed Deputy Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati.

Tender for desilting

Officials have been directed to float tenders for removing silt from the Baje dam across the Swarna. They have also been asked to carry out a survey and float tenders to remove silt from the rajakaluve (storm-water drains) in the city. A proposal had been prepared for the rejuvenation of all the old borewells and open wells in Udupi city limits and to remove silt from the Mannu Palla lake in Manipal. The DC has also directed the officers to take up immediate maintenance work of the gates at the Baje dam.

Tanker water approved

Permission has been given for the supply of water through tankers and for emergency works within Udupi municipality limits. Water will be supplied three days after tap water has been supplied through the municipality pipelines. Informed the DC and added that, since there is a severe water scarcity in the city, people should not waste or misuse water and cooperate with the staff of Udupi City Municipal Council.
