City bus climbs divider, brings down electricity pole; several injured

Incident occurred at Lalbhag in Mangaluru

Mangaluru: A private city bus climbed the divider in front of Pabbas ice cream parlour near Lalbhag after the driver lost control of his vehicle and brought down a street light standing erect on the divider. 8 people including a child were injured in the incident.

Four passengers who suffered minor injuries were treated as out patients and left after being given treatment while the remaining injured passengers identified as Kariyappa Bhangi (23), a resident of Jamakhandi in Bagalakot, Kiran (23), a resident of Kodialbail, Shankar (28) and his son Sharath (2) are receiving treatment as in-patients. They are out of danger, informed the police.

Incident synopsis

The private city bus plying to State Bank from Tannirbavi via Kuloor – Urwa Store – PVS climbed the divider at 1:40 pm in the afternoon and came to a halt after bringing down the street light installed there. The force of impact was such that the front side of the bus has been damaged. The divider too has been damaged. There were more than 25 passengers in the bus during the incident.

It is being said that the incident occurred due to the rash and negligent driving of the bus driver in his bid to overtake another vehicle. Soon after the incident, the driver has fled from the location. Traffic west police have registered a case against the absconding driver on the charges of over-speeding and rash and negligent driving.
