Udupi: In order to ensure sustainable hygiene at homes in the district, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched a free installation of an environment friendly tiger worm toilet and the pilot project has been successfully implemented throughout the district.
Rs 10 lakh was reserved for this project and the aim was to implement it at a total of 100 locations. Accordingly, the project was implemented at 50 houses at Kadtala in Karkala taluk, 10 houses in Udupi taluk, 20 houses at Hangaluru in Kundapur taluk, 10 houses in Basrur and 10 houses in Hosadu.
6 months observation
In normal toilets, it is challenging to process and dispose the contents of pit toilets and septic tanks. If any of the underground drainage pipes connecting to the waste procession unit is missing, there is problem. But this is not like that. The maggots installed in this consume human waste and completely converts it into manure. After the installation of such toilets, they are kept under observation for 6 months.
What is a Tiger Warm Toilet?
Toilet pits are at least 8-9 feet deep. But in this model, only a 4 feet deep pit is enough. It is installed with rings, followed by gravel followed by the tiger worms. These worms belong to the earthworm family and survive on feces. They consume human or animal waste and convert it into manure. Thus they cause no harm to the environment. Besides, if there is a well in the vicinity of normal toilets, the water in the well can get polluted. However, with this technology, none of that will happen.
Converted into compost
The newly installed pits will appear similar to the pits of a normal toilet. But at the bottom, it has a filter bed made of worms. They process waste into water, carbon dioxide and compost. There is no disease causing germs involved in this process. The only concern here is vermicide. If extremely poisonous liquids are used at the toilet, they can potentially kills the worms. Therefore the use of organic/environment friendly sterilization liquid is well advised.
Good scheme
They constructed it for free on behalf of the GP. There is a lot of profit from this scheme. Since there were many houses located nearby, the water in the well used to get polluted. Presently, that problem is not there – Pushpa Bai, Beneficiary, Kadtala village
Aim is to prevent loss
Already, this has been successfully implemented at 100 houses. The people have responded well to this. Through tiger worm toilets, it is possible to prevent the damage caused to the environment and pollution of water in a well located near a normal toilet – Shrinivas Rao, Nodal Officer
