Mangaluru: Former MLA and Congress leader J.R. Lobo, on October 16, alleged that the Christian community was being used as a soft target for the BJP government’s political gains.
He was referring to the recent decision of the house committee of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on backward classes and minorities to survey Christian missionary work in the state to identify “unauthorised” people involved in the work.
Addressing the media Lobo said, “The decision for the survey is being justified on the reason of alleged religious conversions. However, these allegations are baseless.”
He underscored that it was impossible to convert anyone to another religion forcibly and said “Even if such cases occur, there are enough laws to protect the victims. BJP is unnecessarily targetting a particular community.”
The Christian community is a peace-loving community that has immensely contributed to the field of education, medicine, and social service, he said.
“If beneficiaries of the society had to change their religion, then 70% of the country’s population would have been Christian, which is not the case,” he added.
