Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government today announced a relief of Rs three lakh to the families of three students from the city who drowned in a Pune dam recently.

Chief Minister K Palaniswami condoled the death of S Saravanakumar, K Danish Raja and G Santhosh, who drowned in the Mulshi dam located around 50 km from Pune early this week.

The three were part of a group of 20 students of Chennai’s ECS Matriculation school who were visiting the dam along with their teachers on April 25.

The incident occurred after all students entered the backwaters for swimming.

While the body of Raja was fished out by the local police with the help of villagers, those of the two others were retrieved by a team of 26 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Today, Palaniswami said he has directed providing a relief of Rs one lakh each to the families of the deceased boys, all aged 14.

The amount will be given from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund, he said in a statement.

He further said he has directed the School Education department to launch a probe into the incident and initiate legal action.
