New Delhi: Facing severe backlash from the Opposition and her own party seniors, BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur on Friday tendered an apology for her praise of Nathuram Godse in Lok Sabha and said that her remarks were twisted to give them a different meaning and demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi for calling her a terrorist

Speaking at the Lok Sabha on Friday, Sadhvi Pragya said, “I apologise if my remarks have hurt anyone. But my statements made in Parliament are being distorted to give them a different meaning. I respect Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution to the nation.”

She added, “A member of the House referred to me as terrorist. It is an attack on my dignity. No charges against me have been proven in court. It is an attack on me as a woman, a Parliamentarian and a sanyaasi.”

Sadhvi Pragya Thakur was referring to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s attack on Thursday saying, “Terrorist Pragya calls terrorist Godse, a patriot.”

Unsatisfied with Thakur’s apology, the Congress strongly protested in the House and shouted slogans.

The principal opposition party also demanded suspension of Thakur from the House.

Earlier, as soon as the House met for the day, Congress leader in the House Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said opposition members have raised the issue of Thakur’s comments in the House on Wednesday.

He said such remarks also hurt the dignity of the chair and as the custodian of the House, the Speaker should take action.

Without naming Thakur, the Speaker then said he would “ask the respected member to come to the House at noon after Question Hour”.

The BJP MP is facing opposition fire for her remarks on Godse.

The Congress and other constituents of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) are also likely to move a censure motion in Lok Sabha against Thakur for her remarks, sources said.
