Student protest turns violent; police resort to lathi charge

Belthangady: The police here were compelled to resort to lathi charge after a a conflict between two student groups turned violent on Saturday May 25th. The police also arrested nine students in this connection.
Apparently, a fight broke out between two students of a private college over a phone message regarding BJP and Congress. The two were admitted to a hospital soon after.
Later in the evening, 15 members of CFI and PFI started protesting at Belthangady bus stop without prior permission from the police. When the police confronted them and asked them to stop the protestors began to attack the police. In response, the police resorted to lathi charge in self-defence. 9 students were arrested while the remaining escaped. A enquire into the incident is underway.
