Mangaluru: Leader of the cooperatives and chairman of SCDCC Bank Dr. MN Rajendra Kumar has backtracked from his earlier decision to contest the Karnataka Legislative Council polls to be held on December 10.
Making an official announcement on Saturday, he said, “I want to remain non-partisan in the field of cooperation, so I will stay away from politics and work for the upliftment of the cooperative sector.”
Giving reasons for his sudden U-turn, Kumar said “My fans requested me to stand for elections as an Independent. Once someone contests in an election, you will naturally have to go for a party and I don’t want to do that. I have decided not to contest,” and added that he won’t change his mind even if Congress gives a ticket.
On Tuesday, Rajendra Kumar had revealed his decision to contest the MLC elections for the Dakshina Kannada (DK)-Udupi constituency. Speaking at the inauguration of his campaign office in the city, Rajendra Kumar has said that he would contest the legislative council elections as an independent candidate to gain representation to the cooperative sector in the Council.
He had also appealed to the voters and political parties to give him an opportunity to serve the cooperative sector in the Council.
