Indian-origin Democrat Sara Gideon is being endorsed by former two-time US President Barack Obama as the senatorial candidate for Maine.
Sara Gideon is currently the Speaker of the Maine State Assembly, and is giving a tough fight to Republican incumbent Senator Susan Collins.
According to Bostonglobe, Gideon is seen as one of the most high-profile Senate races in the November polls. The Democrats are banking on Gideon to gain a majority in the US Senate.
Gideon was born in Rhode Island and graduated from East Greenwich High School in 1989. Gideon’s father immigrated from India and worked as a pediatrician in Rhode Island.
Sara attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and moved to Freeport, where she lives with her husband and three children, in 2004.
If elected in November, she will be the second Indian American women to be elected to the US Senate after Kamala Harris
