Belthangady: The Charmadi Ghat road which was in a pretty bad state has finally got the opportunity to be repaired. Since access to Shiradi Ghat was stopped for its repair work, for several months, the traffic density along Charmadi Ghat grew drastically consequently destroying the road due to over the limit wear and tear and giving birth to massive pot holes. As a result it was a real challenge for the vehicles to pass through this Ghat road. Daily, at least any vehicle would suffer enough damage to grind to a halt, thereby causing much trouble to vehicular movement for hours together. In order to solve this problem, repair work has been taken up along this road by patching up the potholes here.

Charmadi Ghat has many hairpin bends and connects Dakshina kannada district with Chikkmagaluru district. However, the guard rail along this road has weakened and if a driver of a vehicle lost control of his vehicle, the danger he faces is extreme. On some turns, sand bags have been placed. In the backdrop of the repair work which was being done on Shiradi Ghat because of which it was closed to the traffic, the private vehicles including trucks, lorries, buses and others were compelled to make use of Charmadi Ghat to reach Bengaluru and other places. Many-a-times there have been traffic blocks here because o which the passengers have suffered. Many of the drainages along the highway had also suffered damage.

The various devotees form Chikkamagaluru, Shimoga, Davanagere and other places, who were visiting the different religious places in the district also preferred to travel through Charmadi Ghat. During holidays, the vehicle density along this road only witnessed a further increase. As the pot holes along the road are being patched up, it is being heard that it would be better if the entire length of the road was re-asphalted.

Fear of ravine

“At the end of the Ghat, on one side are the pot holes, and if a heavy vehicle attempts to miss the pot holes, on the other side near the turning lies the ravine which only instills fear in the driver. It is better to wake up before any disaster takes place,” says Rajesh M, a traveler
