Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister Lakshman Savadi on Wednesday said that the government is mulling installing special sensor-based devices to check its drivers from dozing off at the wheel.

“These sensors will initially warn the driver with a beep sound and a red light in event of him getting drowsy,” Savadi, who is in charge of Transport Ministry told reporters after presiding over a meeting with officers of state-run transport corporations in Bengaluru.

Further, he said that the device is capable of slowing down the vehicle and applying emergency brakes which will help avert accidents caused by sleepy drivers.

“Apart from making travel safer for both staff and passengers, the high-tech security equipment will also help save expenditure that the corporation incurs in such mishaps,” Savadi said.

Earlier this year 19 persons were killed after the driver of a Ernakulam-bound Kerala-government bus from Bengaluru allegedly fell asleep and collided with a container truck in Tirupur.
